COME AND SIN SOME MORE

To win forgiveness of one's sins
I'd like to know where one begins.
May one deal in large amounts
And quickly try to square accounts,
Or must we take them one by one
And face a long and painful run
Of agonizing and remorseful sessions
Dealing step by step with past transgressions?

And how can one make amends
With a lengthy list that never ends?
Although we all live day by day
And try to keep those sins away,
I must confess, to my sorrow,
There’s going to be some more tomorrow.

  THE CUTTING EDGE

I fear I never was too sure
What constituted “literature.”
And all the poets that I read
Didn't seem to help, instead
I wondered if the world of woe
Described by Edgar Allan Poe
Might have been what Milton Lost
While mending wall with Robert Frost.
Did Browning in a Tuscan Garret
Brew English tea for Lizzy Barrett?
Does Ezra Pound while Robert Burns?
And Keats tell what a Grecian earns?
Or should that be tell what he owed?
It’s something I was never told.
I know I should respect my betters,
Those serious folk of English letters,
But still I take the most delight
In all the things they didn't write.
I think a poet could do much worse
Than Burma Shave's fine school of verse.
Some might say that road's outdated,
But that’s where I matriculated.
I learned iambics and trochaics
From following those red mosaics,
And when the jolly jig was done,
I knew that rhyming should be fun.
Who among us can stay grave
When the final word is just a shave?
