AT THE GALLERIES

Currently showing at Toby’s in downtown Point Reyes are spectacular watercolors by Birgit O’Connor and large, colorful quilts by Sandy Dierks. Both artists live in Bolinas.

O’Connor’s watercolors are huge, particularly her floral pieces. The landscapes are smaller. Both display masterful control of a difficult medium. The floral pieces will remind you of Georgia O’Keeffe on one of her better days.

Dierks’ quilts are a departure from the conventional geometric patterns of the American tradition. Many are pictorial and narrative in nature – well worth close study.

Both artists have managed to fill the large gallery to its full potential, an accomplishment not always achieved by those dealing in smaller, more intimate images. The show continues through this month.

Next month, the twenty-one artists from Wild Carrots will take over the space. Perhaps you’ve already seen a reproduction of their 50 by 76-inch cooperative painting on the announcement. It’s stunning and easily mistaken for a Chagal or a Kadinsky.

Wild Carrots is the name Toni Littlejohn gave her art coaching sessions that began in Point Reyes over thirteen years ago.

The other artists are Nancy Beck, Susan Brayton, Mesa Dawn Brock, Catherine Cuenin, Pam Fabray, Paula Fava, Erika Kunkel, Maureen Kelly, Cariadne MacKenzie, Patricia Marina, Sarah Means, Marion Ongerth, Ann Read, Natalie Rogers, Amara Rothchild, Susan Sasso, Constance Washburn, Aumi Kie Weissbuch and Stan Weisenberg.
