You could say that my new venture in abstract painting is simply an exploration of the chemical and physical properties of various pigments. Well, maybe, but I’d like to say that explorations lead to discoveries and discoveries can sometimes be wonderful.
The combination of the synthetic yellow with the organic burnt umber in the above painting, for instance, contrast the textural differences of the paints. Like most organic colors, the burnt umber is coarsely ground while the synthetic is very fine. When thinned, the yellow here tends to spread evenly, but the umber concentrates in lines and ridges to define the composition.
Of course, a great deal is left to chance and not all discoveries are wonderful. It is easy, however, to re-prime and re-gesso these less than wonderful explorations and sail forth again.
The painting above is called “Sonata 2.” It’s on a 12 by 9-inch panel and is available for $250.00, tax included.

I have been painting most of the summer with oils either on canvas or panels, but I have temporarily abandoned my usual realistic style. Almost all of the work was done without a brush. I simply thinnned the paint and let it spead and run as gravity moved it. I also manipulated it wth a hair dryer and experminted with various thinners. The resulting abstractions were full of surprises, and I found them great fun. Once started, it was hard to stop.
Of course, these relate closely to the waterbase prints I was doing earlier in the year. Anyway, I will be posting more of both in this space as time goes by. This particual painting is called "Sonata 1" and is on a 12 by 9-inch panel. It is available for $250.00, tax included.

AT THE GALLERIES
Show of the Talking Press Collection at Toby's New Gallery in Point Reyes was a huge success. It now moves to the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael where it will be on display from Nov. 13th until Dec. 1st.
Despite unusual heat, the Our afternoon reception on the first Sunday of October was very well attended. Ian McDonald played the flute and Willis played the piano during the entire two hours of the gala. Print sales were brisk and continued so throughout the show. By the end of the month, more than 20 percent of the art had sold.
This caused the artists to scramble a bit, framing up replacements or substitute prints for the Civic Center show, but of course, we were delighted to be faced with this "problem."
Sales are always gratifying, but just as pleasant were the comments in the guest book.
Donna Sheehan wrote: "We have come a long way. Excellent work!"
Art teacher Colleen Conley, who brought her junior high class from West Marin School to see the show, wrote: "Thanks so much. Beautiful show."
Similar raves came from Wiebke Buxbaum, Patricia Bannerman, Nell Melchor, John Francis, Jules Evans, Sandy Mallouf, Mike and Sally Gale, Zea Morvitz, Gina Kutchins, Chris Dolan, Kathleen Goodwin, Richard Blair, Dorothy White, Suzanne Taylor, Nick Whitney and other local visitors.
Many folks came from distant places. Karen Miller of Cape Town wrote: "So unusual to find a show of such uniformly high caliber. What a treat! Thank you."
Unfortunately, there were scores of signatures I couldn't decipher.
