THE “SOLO” SHOW
“There’s safety in numbers” is an adage I have long subscribed to when it comes to art shows. Hence, I have much preferred group shows, like the one coming up at Toby’s in September, over the solo show.
In fact, I can recall only one solo show I ever had, and that one brought an ironic reaction that still makes me laugh. It was at the Bolinas Museum a few years back. I agreed to it with the thought that it would give me a chance to demonstrate the variety of images and styles that has marked my work over the past several years.
So I put grotesque images up along with whimsical pieces, along with figures, still lifes and abstracts. And there were also plenty of traditional landscapes.
A friend, who had long been enthusiastic about my landscapes, attended the opening and commented a few days later: “Well, I loved you work, but I really didn’t like that other guy’s.”
I probably should have straightened him out, but I didn’t.
In the show coming up, I will be joined by the twelve other artists who have used my Talking Press studio or a regular basis over the years. They are all talented printmakers, and I am very confident that my friend will like “the other guys.”
