OPEN STUDIO LAUGHS
The best experience during last weekend's open studio came when a young couple stopped in for directions. They thought they were on their way to Limontour Beach. Before I put them on the right road, I persuaded them to help turn the wheel of the press and look at the results. They had no idea what an etching was, but they left with a slightly better understanding if not appreciation.
The most disconcerting experience came when another couple all but ignored my most recent etching, of which I am immensely proud, but raved about a painting I did some three years ago. You just can't predict how the public will react.
Anyway, open studios will continue every weekend for the rest of the month with a portion of sales going to Marin Agricultural Land Sales and to Bolinas Museum. Hours are 11 to 5, and the studio is still located at 50 Drakes View Drive in Inverness Park.

Nancy Stein of Inverness Park, a guest artist in my studio for the past five years, is off to a strong start this year with success in juried shows.
So far her work has been accepted for:
"Transferred, the art of Printmaking" sponsored by Mesa contemporary Arts at Mesa, Arizona, June 9-July 17.
"National Print Exhibit" sponsored by ArtLink Gallery at Fort Wayne, Indiana, May 21-June30.
"Pacific Northwest Art Annual" sponsored by University of Oregon Cultural Forum, Adell McMillan Gallery, Eugene, Oregon, May 28-July 1.
Nancy majored in printmaking at California College of Arts and Crafts and then earned a MFA in Printmaking at San Francisco State University. She also attended L'Universite a Strasbourg, France, and the University of Maryland
She is a member of the California Society of Printmakers and is an active member of Point Reyes Open Studios. clixk here

LOVER'S COMPLAINT
Nellie loved a spoiled cat
Who was sassy, indolent and fat,
And it was plain as it could be
That Nellie's cat did not love me.
Had she loved a different pet,
I might be loving Nellie yet.
How oft the pinch of circumstance
Shapes the budding of romance.

AT THE GALLERIES
Tamara Loring and Philip L. Greene, renown for their annual "Exhitals" at their Inverness Park home, will star in a May 16 presentation at Santa Sabina Center in San Rafael. The Sunday program will start at 2:30 p.m. with Loring's Spring Harpsichord Recital and will be followed by Greene's slide presentation of his photography. The center is located at 25 Magnolia Avenue, donation at the door, $15 to $20. Resevations can be made at tloring@svn.net or by calling 415 663 8398.
