For me, it suggests a scene of my old city editor working red-faced on copy submitted by the Bard. "I've explained about redundancies before, Willie, but you've done it again. There's two ‘wells' in this sentence. You may be trying to strike oil, but one of these wells has to go. Okay?"

Mary Proud'homme of San Francisco and Inverness, writes: I always liked "Experience is what you have when your money runs out." Told to me by a friend who said it was something his father often said.

My mother used to quote her father when I would come upon her sewing something and say, rather disparagingly, "What is that??" She would say, "fools and bairns should never see half-done things." Her father was raised in Northern England, so this is probably a Scots or English aphorism.

Northern England is where our chief critic Dr. Michael Howard Manning resides. Perhaps he will help us with "fools and bairns."

They may come in various shapes and sizes,

The rest is fur and emotional flaws.
